Q & A

Why do you like it hot?

I like how the heat helps my muscles relax and I am able to get a better stretch without injuring myself.

I really like Tree. It makes me feel calm and strong.

What is your least favorite?

I have a love - hate relationship with Balancing Stick pose.

Living on Maui and the instructors and students at Bikram Yoga Lahaina.

Q & A

Why do you like it hot?

It makes you truly appreciate the simple things in life, like a drink of water and a cool breeze.

Do you remember what your first Bikram class was like?

Yeah.  It was nice and smooth, nothing like I thought it was gonna be.  It was my third class, I thought I was gonna die!

What is your favorite pose?

Standing Bow, equal parts balance and power.  It makes me feel grounded and strong (most of the time).

What is your least favorite?

Rabbit, I can never tell if I'm doing it right.

Do you have a “most memorable Bikram moment”?

Not really, but it's only been a couple months.

What inspires you?

Among countless other things, genuinely happy people.

What is the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning?

It can't be time to get up already.

What outdoor activities do you like to do?

I enjoy hiking, although it's been way too long since I've done that.  Walking around and exploring foreign towns/cities is a lot of fun too, although that doesn't happen as often as I'd like either.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Ridiculously stupid movies.  Good Burger and Bio-Dome are at the top of the list.  I don't recommend you watch either of them, you'll never get that time (or the brain cells) back.

Describe your perfect yoga shorts?

Never really thought about that; the ones I have right now are pretty perfect.

What’s your favorite place to hang out in Lahaina (besides Bikram of course)?

To be completely honest, home.  My favorite spot in Lahaina.  It has everything I need.

Any tips for beginners?

Breathe.

The way I feel when I leave, and I mean that in the nicest way.

Q & A

Why do you like it hot?

As intimidated as I was of the idea of it being hot, the heat is one of my favorite parts about Bikram. I like it hot for several reasons. First and foremost the heat makes me feel safe. It makes me feel as though I can go deeply into postures without being fearful that I will hurt myself. It takes the fear factor of injury out of the equation so that you can fully relax and be present in your pose, essentially maximizing the benefits. I also like it hot because of the cleansing/detox aspect of it. Sweating it out naturally encourages my body to intake more water throughout the day and also crave healthier foods. Foods that are lighter and leave me with more energy. I could go on and on. The last reason I will share is the mental aspect I gain from the heat. It has built patience and discipline in me that I never experienced before. Being 100 percent uncomfortable physically, wanting to run out of the room, sit down, wipe my face, etc....and pushing thru, it gives me a stillness and calmness that I have not attained by doing any other practice in my life. A sense that as hard as anything may be, it will always be okay and even has the potential to be great in the end.

How many years have you been practicing Bikram Yoga?

I started practicing Bikram 10 years ago.

What is your favorite pose?

My favorite pose changes..... depending on what I am best at. HAHAHA! Right now my favorite pose is Rabbit. I love feeling my back stretch out the oposite way after going so deep in Camel. I feel like everything is complete after that pose. The physical balance has been obtained.

What inspires you/ or Why do you want to become a Bikram Yoga teacher?

Its simple. You receive this amazing gift. A mind blowing experience. Its hard to put it into words. You want them to come see for themselves. How can you not want to share that with others? When you practice regularly, you innately share that with everyone you encounter. I feel as though going to training would only solidify the love and give me an even clearer understanding of the Bikram Yoga practice that I love so so much!! It would also enable me to be one more person fortunate to have the official training, to reach that many more souls.

What outdoor activities do you like to do?

I like swimming, hiking, biking, skateboarding, walking, gardening, snowboarding, reading books in the sun, beach games, singing. I like doing whatever I can outside

What song best describe you?

"Troddin On" by Gentleman

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Coffee, Coffee, Coffee! And sugar, fried anything and my occasional cocktail. I do lots of good things too!!! Balance!!!

What’s your favorite place to hang out in Lahaina (besides Bikram of course)?

The Beach. I like several beaches around town. I also like to spend time playing music, wherever that may be, my house or somewhere else. I like going out, but I really like my home as well

Any tips for beginners?

Just keep coming. No matter what you think or feel or anything for that matter!! Just show up and do your best. The miracle is you and the yoga makes you shine. This practice is for everyone and anyone and it gives you ten fold what you put into it. Like they say in West Africa, "Doni Doni"....little by little. You Can Do It

What keeps you coming back to Bikram yoga?

The benefits of Bikram and the impact of the practice in my life is really hard to try to put into words. Anyone who knows me and loves me, tells me to go to class. Because they see how it affects every aspect of my life in a positive way. When I practice, I get to know myself more, and I love myself more for trying and in turn I get to share more love with the world around me. It gives me life, when I am questioning life. It calms me down and lifts me up all at the same time. It brings out all the better parts of me. And in my eyes it is awesome because it is one of the major major parts of preventative care that we can do for ourselves to insure better health and stamina in our bodies as we walk thru life. Life is such a beautiful gift. It is something to cherish and appreciate as much as we can while we are here. When I practice, I feel as though all my burdens and fears and worries aren't so heavy...and neither is my bum:) Its a win, win situation. Bikram is the best simply because it brings out the best within. These are just a few reasons why I continue to come back!!!

What health benefits have you gained from doing bikram yoga?

Overall, less aches and pains, Great Sound Sleep, Clearer Skin, Healthier hair and nails, Weight Loss, Strengthening, Increased Energy, Expanded Breathing, No Headaches (unless I dont drink water), Flexibility, Agility, Clartiy, Alertness, Efficiency in Daily Tasks(everything is easier and more enjoyable), More balanced emotions(well, maybe:) ), Better Waste Management, Heightened Self Awareness, Lower Anxiety, Higher Confidence, More Laughter and Smiling(creates killer T cells)....the list goes on and on. These are things that I have noticed on my own...I can only imagine what a medical doctor would say!!
